ABOUT
The works portray my long design background in architecture, urbanism, landscape, graphics and signage. At the most elementary level, I think of the outcomes as drawings ... to which things are added or taken away. I also consider them as pieces of graphic art. They aren't digital art of the type you draw on a tablet with a stylus via a drawing app. For gallery entry purposes I describe them as DIGITALLY EDITED + ASSEMBLED DRAWINGS or DIGITALLY ASSEMBLED DRAWINGS or HYBRID DRAWINGS.

Some works have been virtually completed on site with the layers created by using different coloured pens on a single sheet of paper. However, for other works, the only finished object exists on the computer to be realised on paper via the printer. Some of these latter drawings were made in fragments / layers on many separate sheets of paper before being digitally edited and assembled.

THE RESURRECTION OF PIRATE JENNY 2024
Arka Kinari moored at New Farm Park.
A hybrid drawing based on a 21x21 site sketch for Urban Sketchers Brisbane.

I saw the boat moored when we were sketching last Saturday and decided to go back and get a sketch done before it disappeared. Looking at the @arkakinari posts on IG, their on board multi media performances are quite a spectacle. Check them out. The photo of "Pirate Jenny" is taken from a larger photo on the Area Kinari website.

The border text says:
“ARKA” - (Latin) a vessel, from arcere, meaning “to hold off or defend”, “KINARI” - (Sanskrit) a half-human, half-bird musician, guardian of the tree of life. Nova Ruth Setyaningtyas does “Pirate Jenny “, a song from “The Threepenny Opera” by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht.
SUNDOWN 2024
Paddington. Old house in Enoggera Tce.
Trying out a new style ... lots of heavy black like a lino cut print ... with hybrid colours and textures.
POUR ME A CUBAN BREEZE 2024
Town Square. Fish La South Brisbane.
The drawing on the right was done with Urban Sketchers Brisbane, one of whom was dressed in a striped shirt a la WALLY in WHERE'S WALLY. Around that I built a story which, in the final version [on the left], is embedded in the border text. Another sketcher was standing talking to WALLY ... so he became ANTONIO the bartender. The original sketch is shown on the right.
CASCADE 2023
An iconic midcentury building at the Normanby.
A tribute to NORMAN B CARPETS and to m3architecture.
STILL STANDING 2023
SubStation No3. 207A Ipswich Rd Woolloongabba. Built c1917. Heritage listed.
A studio drawing/collage.
The building is well camouflaged from the street and it’s very difficult to find a drawable view. However this camera shot down the old stone wall with the bus stop signage panel provided a great opportunity for some visual drama and a place to showcase the old photo and blueprint working drawings of the substation. It took a bit of work to get the right look on the old pink porphyry stone wall … to portray highly weathered stones with unsharp edges. Images include
     1: Finished artwork.
2: Cyanotype version of finished artwork.
3: Artwork mockup: Site photo with blueprint drawings.
AU REVOIR 2023
Apartment building in West End. A commission for a family going home to France after some years in Brisbane. Images include
     1: Finished artwork.
     2: Preliminary artwork mockup.
     3: Base photo.
     4: Neighbourhood photos.

Virtually all of my composition work is done via site photography and making photo collages where I move stuff endlessly to get the right setting. The collages often contain elements cut from other photos; in this case, various elements from outside the frame of the main photo. I wanted to tell a story about the neighbourhood over and above portraying a particular residence.

LATITUDE 2023
The Lactalis factory in Montague Rd South Brisbane. It was a drawing I'd contemplated for a long time and photographed in detail. I wanted to make something out of the signage on a massive blank wall. and the passing traffic.
RADIO PHO ... LIVE AT FIVE 2023
A drawing of the PHO QUEUE Vietnamese Soup Kitchen in Cracknell Rd Annerley. They open at 5pm. My view is before opening time. Img 1 is the base drawing from which I built a gif [Img 3] to express the life and times of PHO QUEUE next to a busy set of traffic lights. The agitated armed guard on the left keeps the queue in order.

KOOROONGARRA 2023. A work in progress. Updated 29/7/2023.
Kooroongarra is a small historic township south of Millmerran on the Darling Downs with a population of 45 in the 2021 census. The artwork is a series of drawings of which two are virtually finished [cheese factory and butcher shop], four are photo collage mockups made from internet images [managers house, post office, Anglican church and community hall], and one for the general store is a placeholder. And there may be one for the cemetery for which I could find no images on the internet. My intention is to make a collection of hybrid drawings with a 1930s ambience ... an era I imagine as the township heyday.
HOT WIRED 2023
Leftys. Caxton St Petrie Terrace. Brisbane.
A hybrid drawing built from an A5 sketch with USk Brisbane in the company of Peter Richards who likes drawing reflections in windows. The original sketch was an exercise in drawing complex reflections whereas the hybrid drawing is more about the wiring installation high up under the roof.
HA HA 2023
Hai Hai Ramen. Latrobe Tce Paddington.
A work derived from a site sketch with Eri Yamaguchi and Tanya Ashworth. The colours and shadows were applied in Photoshop. The sky pattern is from a photo I took of a mural inside Hai Hai.
B&B NORTH 2017-23
An upgrade of an old but likeable sketch with improved plants and a new sky.
B&B CENTRAL  JAN 2023
An upgrade of a sketch of Bostock Chambers in Ipswich which capitalises on the idea of B&B.
CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES  JAN 2023
Former BAFS building. Wickham St Fortitude Valley.
The building probably looked okay when it was built more than a hundred years ago, but it has suffered from endless renos, refurbs and modernisations; as well as the addition of aircon services and signage for a major arterial road intersection. It was hard to find a good view.
WITCH WAY  JAN 2023
Stones Corner Hotel. Cnr Logan Rd & Old Cleveland Rd Stones Corner.
A drawing done following a request by a local resident for something based on the hotel and the retro signage.
SHINKO'S DILEMMA #2  NOV 2022
Japanese Garden. MtCoot-Tha Botanic Gardens.
This artwork production is accompanied by  a new greeting card in a series called FUSION FLAVOURS.
FINAL EDITION OCT 2022
Newsroom Cafe. Sherwood Rd Toowong.
The cafe, which has been vacant for some time, was demolished in the two weeks between doing my first sketch and completing the work.

EASTER RABBIT APR 2022.
Black Rabbit Espresso. Musgrave Rd Red Hill.
50x50cm ink and pencil drawing on 300gsm hot press watercolour paper.

REMEMBERING ANTONIO BONET APR 2022.
Drysdales Corner. Cnr Water St + Kennigo St Spring Hill.
50x50cm pen and pencil drawing on 300gsm hotpress watercolour paper.

The drawing is a memoir for the Spanish modernist architect, Antonio Bonet Castellano, 1913-1989, who designed a house in Punta Ballena Uruguay in 1948. A photo was published showing a woman on a concrete stair landing looking out to sea. After posting the work on Instagram, a comment was made by Victoria Bonet Marti. She subsequently posted the photo on her own Instagram account noting that the woman was her mother, Ana Maria Marti Abello de Bonet, the wife of the architect. Antonio Bonet is best known for the BKF Butterfly chair designed by Bonet Kurchan Ferrari architects. He designed many significant buildings in both South America and Spain.

TRUCKS ON THE OVERPASS FEB 2022.
Caltex Truck Stop. Port of Brisbane.
50x50cm pen and pencil drawing on 300gsm hot press watercolour paper.
The last image in the group is a hybrid version called  called SHIPPING NEWS.
A gallery finalist in LETHBRIDGE 20000 ART AWARD 2022.

MANIPULATED OBJECTS | ARCHITECTS LICENSE | WINDOW DRESSING. NOV-DEC 2021
Three views of an old shop on the corner of Musgrave Rd and Hammond St Red Hill. The shop and the house on the adjoining property are relics of the 1860s which share an incredible patina of age, four brick chimneys and many roof vents. The old shop is undergoing refurbishment for KO&Co Architecture whohave bought my originals [bottom row] and are going to frame them in the new year. The top row are my hybrid versions which have transparent layers of grunge textures and tea coloured skys to give the effect of mouldy old prints. The originals are pen and pencil on 300gsm hotpress watercolour paper.
