Constructed in 2004, the landscape is woven around a number of free-standing elements arranged as modern objects set in juxtaposition to a typical Queensland house built in 1915. The graphic art is a reference to a number of things:
a black bird by Le Corbusier in the coloured glass panels of Ronchamp Chapel
Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror movie “The Birds”
the black bird as a traditional folk culture symbol for mischief and bad luck
birds travelling through a long dry landscape cut by a winding river
The design eventually made it's way onto a teeshirt.
